Homework 1

Due Tuesday, September 12:

The following problems must be turned in:

  1. Solve for x and check: \sqrt{x+1} = \sqrt{2x} + 1.
  2. Rationalize the denominators and simplify: \frac{3}{\sqrt{5}} - \frac{5}{\sqrt{3}}.
  3. Simplify: \sqrt{48} + 5\sqrt{3}.
  4. Simplify: -(16x^6y^{-8})^{1/4}.
  5. Simplify: \sqrt[3]{8x^3y^4}.
  6. Re-write using rational exponents: 3\sqrt[3]{x^2y^4}.
  7. Re-write using radicals: 3x^{1/2}y^{2/3}.
